Core Curriculum

Colgate’s Core Curriculum, a defining feature of the university, exemplifies the faculty’s mission to engage students in the fullness of a liberal arts education: to learn, reflect, and live with an expanding awareness of one’s responsibility to self, community, and the larger world.

Crossing Boundaries is the theme of the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, and four interrelated components constitute what Colgate refers to as the "Common Core."
  • Legacies of the Ancient World
  • Challenges of Modernity
  • Scientific Perspectives on the World, and
  • Communities and Identities
Global Engagements, the fifth Core requirement, furthers students' understanding of the complex and diverse world in which they live. Courses in this component are drawn from departments and programs across the university.
